ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RESEARCH

The Nagaland Institute of Science & Technology (NIST) is actively working to document and scientifically study traditional medicine practices across the state. These practices, deeply rooted in the culture of indigenous tribes, rely heavily on medicinal plants found in Nagaland’s rich biodiversity. Despite the growth of modern healthcare, traditional healing continues to play a vital role in many communities.

To preserve this valuable knowledge and explore its potential for modern use, NIST has established a dedicated research wing. A laboratory has been set up with equipment for solvent extraction, and in collaboration with Sphaera Pharma Ltd., NIST is conducting in-vitro and in-vivo studies to validate the safety and effectiveness of selected medicinal plants. This initiative aims to bridge traditional wisdom with modern science, contributing to better healthcare and sustainable use of natural resources.
