The Nagaland Institute of Science & Technology (NIST) is leading an initiative to document and scientifically study Nagalandās traditional medicine practices. Deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the stateās indigenous tribes, these practices draw upon both plants and animals, including locally sourced herbs, crabs, insects, and other natural resources found within Nagalandās rich biodiversity. Despite the advancement of modern healthcare, these time-honoured remedies continue to play a vital role in supporting community health and wellbeing.
To preserve this invaluable knowledge and explore its scientific potential, NIST has begun conducting ethnopharmacological research focusing on the safety, efficacy, and therapeutic properties of selected traditional substances. The instituteās laboratory is equipped for solvent extraction and biological analysis, enabling studies on both botanical and zoological resources. In collaboration with Ostic Pharma Pvt. Ltd., NIST is carrying out in-vitro and in-vivo experiments to validate and better understand these traditional remedies through a modern scientific approach.
Through these efforts, NIST seeks to bridge traditional wisdom with modern science, fostering innovative, evidence-based healthcare solutions while promoting the sustainable use of Nagalandās natural resources.
